The Calculator Overman is a little trick that I completely fell for when I first saw it. I’ve always been pretty good at math. I could always see if there was some logical solution to a number problem, but here I fell short.
You have 4 number sticks with 4 different numbers on each of the four sides. When you put them down on the table next to each other, you get 4 four-digit numbers. These numbers can be changed by rotating one or more of the number sticks. When the sticks are placed on the table, you immediately tell the audience what the result is when you add the four four-digit numbers together. You give the audience a calculator so they can check that your number is correct. The more times you do this, the more puzzled your audience is.
Your audience puts the number sticks on the table themselves. They decide whether they want to use 2, 3 or 4 sticks. Before they have entered the first digit on the calculator, you have told them the result. As shown in the image, 5792+7377+9684+6829 = 29682. And you can say that result in less than a second.
The principle is brilliant and you don’t even need to be good at math. It’s like a good friend of mine said: It doesn’t matter if you can do math, as long as you can figure it out.
