“A First Class Act”
–David Copperfield
Effect:
You invite a spectator to participate in an amazing experience where he travels using his imagination. First, the magician mentions an object you find in an airplane. A thing that we always see, but we hardly ever read what we should. We’re talking about the emergency card (the card with emergency exits etc.). This is always located in the pocket in front of the seats. Unfortunately, we are too lazy to read it, but it can save our lives in case of an emergency. This information is very important, so the magician hands out a real emergency card and encourages the spectator to open it and actually read it. While the spectators do so, the magician turns to the audience to say that a spectator must now choose a destination. The magician now shows many boarding passes with different tourist destinations, boarding groups and seat numbers. A helper randomly selects a boarding pass and the journey begins.
The pilot announces that the plane is ready to take off. The spectators are asked to fasten their seatbelts and enjoy the flight. The magician asks the spectator to close his eyes to relax and get some sleep, but a second later he asks him to open his eyes again (there’s a baby crying in the back seat). To help him relax, he now shows him a list of different drinks available during the flight and he chooses a drink.
The magician now shows a tray with a bag and invites the spectator to say out loud which drink he has chosen (example: whisky). When the magician lifts the paper bag, you can see that he has made a mistake because there is an orange juice under the bag. Now the magician continues and asks him to take the airplane magazine that shows all the movies available and that you should secretly choose one. Now he asks the helper to focus on the movie, the main actor, the soundtrack and other details and magically the magician starts reading the spectator’s mind and reveals one by one all the things he was thinking about. The magician then guesses the exact number of the airplane seat he is sitting in, his boarding group and finally the destination of the flight, the city and country he is traveling to. At the end, the magician ends with a question: Do we choose our own destiny or is it already chosen for us?
At the beginning, the magician gave an emergency card to the spectator and asked him to read it. But did the spectator really read it? When the emergency card is opened, you can see everything on the printed card in the drawings. Everything that just happened, all the “free choices” of the bystander are printed on the card and even better: To be even safer, the magician opens the card and it becomes a giant poster revealing everything that just happened in the routine!
But wait, there’s more. Now the magician asks the spectator again what drink he had originally chosen. The spectator says whiskey, and now the magician lifts the orange juice carton, which turns out to be a giant shell, much to the spectator’s surprise. And that underneath it was a whisky glass.
Maybe our fate has already been chosen. What do you think?

“A great idea geared towards the magician who wants to do some mental-magic in their act. The props supplied are extremely well made and look like real items.”
