Floating effects are some of the most powerful effects you can show an audience. In fact, they are so powerful that most professional magicians use them as their closing effect.
With Grandfather’s Top, you’ll touch the hearts of your audience while showing them something they’ve never seen before. The biggest problem with hover effects that are done close up is that they lack a really good ending. When an object: a coin, a banknote, a card… has floated for a bit, there’s not much left to do – except to give the object for examination and then end the routine. We’ve always felt that there could (and should) be something more… Something that adds a big exclamation mark to the end of the routine so it doesn’t fall apart at the end.
Grandfather’s Top begins with you showing a capsule with a hole and a small piece of wood in a small cardboard box. You assemble these items into a spinning top and as the story progresses, you show your audience that this spinning top has a life of its own. It floats from hand to hand, then all the way around your body. At the end of the routine, the top disappears into thin air. But in the end, you find it in the box where it was at the beginning. This is the perfect ending we’ve been looking for!

We teach an alternate disappearance that can be done without other items, but we want to make sure it’s clear that this disappearance will require an additional gimmick that is not included.
